After Toyota introduced the fifth generation of the 4Runner back in 2009, it received just a mid-cycle upgrade and a few interior and exterior refreshes. But it grew outdated, and it lacks big changes to stay competitive with other adventure SUVs on the market. The 2025 Toyota 4Runner will bring big interior and exterior changes. This means Toyota will introduce a sixth generation of the 4Runner at the end of 2024.
The changes will be many, starting with the exterior, which will get a whole new design. Also, the interior will get a huge overhaul. We also expect Toyota to put the latest technology and safety features inside this SUV. But changes will not stop with visual upgrades. It will also get a new engine and transmission under the hood, and there is also a change: we will see a hybrid powertrain available.
The 2025 Toyota 4Runner should come with a 2.4-liter, 4-cylinder engine that will be shared with a Tacoma. This engine will produce up to 290 horsepower with 330 pound-feet of torque. It will be paired with an 8-speed automatic gearbox.
Because Toyota will make a new 4Runner on a TNGA-F platform that is based on body-on-frame style, we expect to see just all-wheel drive. Toyota promises us that this will help the new 4Runner achieve never-seen-before offroad capabilities in this class.
For towing capabilities, we expect up to 5,500 pounds.
Also, we expect to see a hybrid powertrain option for a new generation of 4Runner.
Probably Toyota will choose their IForce Max engine. This mill will have a displacement of 2.4 liters, and it will be paired with a small electric motor. And it will deliver up to 330 horsepower with 480 pounds of torque. This engine will be reserved for top-tier trims.
The forthcoming 4Runner will feature the TRD Pro as its premium trim, positioned as the pinnacle of the lineup in terms of pricing. Tailored for an exceptional off-road experience, this variant boasts several enhancements compared to the standard model. Notable upgrades comprise a set of distinctive 17-inch wheels equipped with off-road tires, a TRD-stamped alloy skid plate, and an improved off-road suspension system featuring performance shocks and TRD-tuned front springs. The exterior showcases a unique front grille with a fresh design, lending an exclusive touch to the TRD Pro. To further enhance off-road capabilities, an electronic locking differential is incorporated. Additionally, a suite of software upgrades is integrated, facilitating the customization of the vehicle to suit various terrains and ensuring optimal adaptability on the chosen road. The TRD Pro variant thus promises an unparalleled off-road driving experience with a comprehensive array of specialized features and enhancements.
As we mentioned before, a new generation of Toyota 4Runners will get an interior overhaul. It will share a lot of features with the new Tacoma interior, but it will also be unique in its own way.
Some of the noticeable interior features will include a new 12-inch touchscreen that will be used to control the info-entertainment system inside the truck. Front leather seats that will have an option for heating and venting. Also, they will offer great lumbar support for long rides.
Depending on the trim level, the interior of the 4Runner will range from a pretty basic one to well-equipped, with plenty of quality materials used. Also on the higher-end trims, we will find a wireless charging pad on the center console. Premium sound system with 12 speakers. There are plenty of connectivity options, including Android Auto and Apple Car Play.
Also, there will be up-to-date safety features on this SUV. Including blind spot monitoring, a backup camera, and a Star Safety System. Eight Airbag. And on higher-end trims, the 4Runner will be equipped with a 360% camera, safe reorganization, a premium navigation system, and much more.
At this moment, there is no official statement about the release date of the new 2025 Toyota 4Runner, but it is expected to be announced in Q1 of 2024. And we expect the new 4Runner to be available for sale in Q3 or 2024. The starting price for a base model will start around $45,000.
This will be the price for a base trim called SR5. The TRD Pro will cost around $57.000, and that will be the most expensive trim model that will be available for a 4Runner.
Our choice for the best model will go to the Limited because it will offer a luxurious interior with a hybrid powertrain option available for a good price (it will start at $47.000).
The new Toyota 4Runner is expected to achieve good sales results thanks to its reliable powertrains. Impressive offroad and working capabilities. Comfortable and spacious interior. And good pricing politics.
